A Little History
Isambard Kingdom Brunel established his railway works for the Great Western Railway In Swindon in 1840, making Swindon an incredible place to visit or live for any rail enthusiast. At this time, a brand-new city was founded to house the rail workforce, and these historic buildings are what make up the town centre today. STEAM – the Museum of the Great Western Railway is located in a beautiful Grade II railway building in the midst of the former Swindon railway works and provides educational entertainment for children and adults.
If you are planning to visit Swindon for a short stay, there are plenty of hotels and AirBnB options in the heart of the city that will act as a convenient base as you explore the area. Even if you are already planning on buying a property in Swindon, it is always a great idea to spend some time there first so that you know exactly what to expect from your new city.
What Is Swindon Like Today?
Swindon, in the county of Wiltshire in the South West of England, is a huge, bustling town that is probably best known currently as the site of the internationally popular comedy “The Office”. This city has undergone a great deal of change in recent years, making for an exciting place to live.
When the railway industry collapsed in the 1960s, Swindon became a magnet for major corporations looking to set up shop in the South West. Swindon is home to a number of important corporations, including Honda, BMW/mini, and various telecoms and financial services firms, creating jobs and opportunities for anybody in the City. Fortunately, this influx of business hasn’t taken over the full city, there are still plenty of parks and green spaces to enjoy, such as the town gardens which are possibly Swindon’s best kept secret.
There Is Plenty To Do In The Town
Having a completely pedestrianised town centre makes Swindon a shopper’s dream. The old town district features many long-standing family businesses, and the covered Brunel Centre features over a hundred stores and cafes. The Parade features unusual and decorative canopies housing many well-known shops. The Swindon Designer Outlet is located in the historic buildings of the railway works, only 15 minutes from the heart of town. There are many housing options available near the town centre so that you are only a short walk from shops and leisure facilities, alternatively, you could live further away and use Swindon’s amazing public transport network to get you quickly into town.
As a bonus, the town serves as a wonderful home base from which to discover the rest of the stunning county of Wiltshire. Stonehenge, Avebury, the cathedral city of Salisbury, Longleat House, the white horses etched into the chalk hills, and Lydiard Park and House near Swindon are all within easy driving distance, providing you with endless possibilities for days out.
